(ECNS) -- Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou has ordered law enforcement and security forces to refrain from deploying nets designed to catch shoes hurled by demonstrators, according to a China Times report.

Ma told the special security center that he wants to attend events without "dodging" the public, and that protests should be treated as normal occurrences.

"I didn't do anything wrong, so I don't need to hide. There is no need to deploy a net when I make public appearances. I will face any public protest," Ma was quoted as saying.

Taiwan police stations at all levels were ordered to buy protective nets after shoes were thrown at Ma last December.

Taipei bought the most advanced and flexible net, which can reach a height of eight meters.
