Mrs. Wen shows her daughter's homework with an A-.
(ECNS) -- A teacher who gave an A- to a student for writing out Chinese characters that hadn't been taught in class has sparked criticism in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, the Chongqing Times reported.
The first-grade girl, named Tongtong, now "refuses to write any characters that have not been taught in class," according her mother Mrs. Wen.
Wen said that last Tuesday she found an A- on her daughter's homework, although Tongtong had written out all of the characters, instead of simplifying with pinyin. The teacher wrote: "Don't write out characters which are not taught in class!"
Tongtong said the teacher also criticized two other classmates for overdoing it.
Wen told reporters that she had taught her daughter to write many characters before primary school, and couldn't understand the teacher's actions.
The teacher explained that first-grade pupils should focus on pinyin, not characters, because it makes it harder to correct mistakes.
Many parents online showed opposition to the teacher for undermining the students' motivation.
Chen Jichen, a college student, said the teacher could have used a better method to deal with it.
Tang Fei, a middle schooler who cited himself as an example, said criticism from teachers has a serious impact on students.
