Eight rules that define interactions between boys and girls drafted by Xiang'an No.1 High School in Xiamen city.
(ECNS) -- A high school in Fujian province has drafted eight rules that define interactions between boys and girls, including walking together, as "early love relationships," the Haixia Daobao from Xiamen reported Wednesday.
A draft by Xiang'an No.1 High School in Xiamen city was posted online Tuesday, raising controversy.
Except during recess, if a girl and a boy appear together in any corner of the campus, classrooms, corridors or on the playground, or if they are holding hands or engaged in other intimate activities, they will be considered in an "early love relationship," according to the first rule.
A netizen suggested the school separate boys and girls, like in the 1970s. Another criticized the school for using the negative word "rampant," when it said it was tackling "the rampant phenomenon of boy-girl relations within the school." "The actions are against human nature," the netizen added.
A teacher at the school said it was just a draft version to solicit teachers' opinions.
Ju Donghong, a sociology professor at Jimei University, said the school is overreacting to normal interactions between boys and girls, and such bans might result in rebellious behavior. Schools and teachers should focus on teaching students how to communicate with each other and the right values for love relationship, Ju added.
