(ECNS) – China ranks top of the list in nearly all polluting emissions in the world, an expert at the Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning has said.
Wang Jinnan, vice president and chief engineer at the academy, made the remarks Tuesday at a panel session on environment at the Beijing Forum 2013. Pollution, ecological damage and climate change are the three major environmental issues China is confronted with, he said.
Wang also said that China's rapid economic growth over the past four decades has mainly depended on cheap resources.
Air pollution is getting worse, and terms such as nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter have become widely known to the public, Wang said, adding that water safety issues in rural areas may be worse than urban areas.
Environment pollution has also caused many disputes and accidents, said Wang.
"China already has an advanced philosophy on environmental management, but cannot carry out it well," he said. "We should rethink the institutional issue of environmental protection."
The Beijing Forum 2013 was themed with "Harmony of Civilizations and Prosperity for All—Retrospect and Prospect."
