(ECNS) – A series of anti-corruption comics created by farmers has been posted on the official website of the Central Committee for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party (CCDI), the Chengdu Commercial Daily reports.
"The online exhibition of these comics will appeal to more readers," said Wang Qishan, secretary of the CCDI, who approved the online post on the website.
The creators of the comics live in Qiuxian, a county in Hebei province. A less developed agricultural county, Qiuxian is home to around 260,000 residents with average annual incomes of only 6,000 yuan (US$985.2).
It also has over 3,000 cartoonists. "Local people have become accustomed to criticizing reality with comics," said Zhao Congjiang, secretary of the local discipline commission.
Qiuxian has set aside a number of walls where anti-corruption comics are posted. The comics are often caricatures of local cadres misbehaving.
Reports of foul play by officials in the county have declined by 221 percent over the previous year, according to local statistics. "The results may not all be because of the comics, but their effects cannot be ignored," said Zhao.
Zhao says he is also planning to create a comic industry to benefit more local farmers.
