(ECNS) -- Frantic shoppers can feel a little less guilty about irrational spending on Singles Day, now that a diamond has sold for $3.3 million during the buying spree.
The shopping record was set Monday morning when the 20.5-million-yuan diamond was sold at T-mall, one of China's largest B2C marketplaces, shocking many netizens.
The merchant that sold it said the 13.33-carat diamond was bought by an old client surnamed Huang in Zhejiang province, and that the price was less than half its market value.
The client has paid 500,000 yuan as a deposit, and the rest of the money will be paid after the style has been tailored according to the client's requests, the owner said.
The buyer had negotiated the price with the store before Singles Day.
The store said it will choose an express delivery company for the insured item.
Taobao.com and Tmall.com, key sales platforms under the Alibaba Group, offered big discounts throughout Monday, or Singles Day, and had achieved record sales of 35 billion yuan by 9 p.m.
