(ECNS) -- A man who tried to smuggle 149 pieces of chinchilla fur from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, Guangdong province, was seized by customs officers at Shenzhen's Futian Port on Wednesday.
Chinchilla fur is known as a kind of "super material" for making fur clothing. The value of the fur is equivalent to gold in weight, according to a customs official.
A designer fur coat made of chinchilla can sell for $30,000 to $100,000, said the official, who added that making a single chinchilla fur coat can take the skin of over 100 chinchillas.
An investigation of the smuggling case is still under way.
