Beijing (CNS) -- The number of billionaires in China (mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan) has surpassed the US and is tops in the world, according to Rupert Hoogewerf, founder of Hurun China Rich List, but the number of them engaging in charity work lags.
Hoogewerf made the statement in a speech at the 2013 China Philanthropy Forum held in Beijing on Monday.
The number of billionaires in mainland China rose to 263 in 2013, and to 481 with Hong Kong's billionaires, and the total number including Taiwan will surpass the US, according to Hoogewerf.
He said about 50 richest people had their names on both China Rich List and China Philanthropy List released in 2013, and Huang Jialun, who was ranked 34 on the rich list, topped the philanthropy one. They have donated about one percent of their income.
"What matters is they do engage in charity, not how much they donate."
Hoogewerf also pointed out that compared with India's richest people, with 80 percent of them being the most generous in charity programs, Chinese billionaires tend to keep a low-profile in charity.
