(ECNS) -- China's reformed one-child policy will not apply to couples who already have more than one child, even if one of the couple is an only child, according to an official from the National Population and Family Planning Commission (NPFPC) in Beijing on Tuesday.
According to a key reform officially announced last Friday, the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee has given the green light to couples wanting to have two children if one of them is an only child, a significant change to the current one-child policy.
However, family planning and population control remains a basic state policy for China, the official said.
The existing family planning policy was implemented to control the number of newborns in the country, the official added.
