(ECNS) -- Scientists in China have developed the country's first liquid body armor, making it the third country in the world to have the technology, following the US and UK.
The liquid body armor is made of a kind of smart nanomaterial called TBS, which is non-toxic and pollution-free, according to Zhong Fachun, leader of a research team that developed the body armor at the China Academy of Engineering Physics.
The body armor is soft and pliable when it is in liquid state. However, it will harden instantly when something like shrapnel or bullet hits it, promising unprecedented protection while letting soldiers move freely, unrestricted by bulk and weight.
The armor is 45 percent thinner than a traditional one, while its bulletproof effectiveness is improved by 30 percent, Zhong said.
Besides being used to make military products like body armor, TBS has also made its way into machinery tools, sports equipment, and shock absorbers.
A commercialization project for the liquid body armor has been launched in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, Zhong added.
