(ECNS) -- A Nanjing newspaper's front-page headline on Tuesday called out Chinese movie director Zhang Yimou amid widespread rumors that he has breached the one-child policy, China National Radio reports.
Sina Weibo user "Chen Jian -- Hero," who claims to be a spokesman for Zhang, denied on Monday that the director had broken China's family planning rules, and demanded an apology from a magazine for accusing Zhang of siring seven children with multiple women, according to the newspaper Oriental Guardian.
However, Chen's statement was later refuted by an employee in the marketing department at Zhang's company, the newspaper added.
In May, the director was alleged to have fathered at least seven children. If found guilty, he could be fined 160 million yuan (US$26.3 million).
Despite Zhang's silence, the rumor has aroused much interest among netizens and media.
The family planning department in the southerly city of Wuxi — where Zhang's wife, Chen Ting, is from — told reporters this month that they have been unable to contact Zhang.
Meanwhile, a photo of Hong Kong director Tsui Hark visiting Zhang on the set of his new movie has just surfaced online.
