Beijing (CNS) -- An evaluation report on the environmental responsibility of 617 A-share listed companies in China was released in Beijing on Friday. The report for the first time ranks companies based on their environmental performance in 2012.
Released by a project team from Beijing University of Chemical Technology, it ranks the companies' environmental performance with their environmental statements, corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports, and sustainability reports.
According to the report, 426 companies of primary industry and secondary industry did better than 191 businesses of tertiary industry in 2012 in terms of their green endeavors.
Companies involved in major environmental accidents in 2012 got no marks in the evaluation, according to Chen Dongsheng, head of the project team.
Initiated by the China Forum of Environmental Journalists and the China Youth Center for International Exchange in 2011, the evaluation campaign covered over 2,000 A-share listed companies.
"The number of listed companies that were willing to release their CSR reports and environmental statements is still limited in China," said Chen, who added that among the 2,000 A-share listed companies, only 617 released their CSR reports.
Chen said he hoped releasing the report can improve green awareness at more Chinese companies.
