Taizhou (ECNS) -- Security guards equipped with stab-proof vests and tear gas canisters have been stationed at a hospital in Taizhou city, Zhejiang province, after a nearby hospital witnessed the killing of a doctor by an angry patient about a month ago.
A 33-year-old patient, unhappy with the results of an operation on his nose, stabbed a doctor to death and injured two others at the No.1 People's Hospital in Wenling, a county-level city in Taizhou.
To prevent a reoccurrence, Taizhou police have launched a pilot program to station professional police officers at Taizhou Municipal Hospital.
The hospital is the first in Taizhou to implement such security measures, which also include video monitoring and emergency warning systems in intensive care units and emergency rooms.
"Besides more auxiliary officers and upgraded police equipment for security personnel, we will also organize police training for the hospital's original security guards," said Xu Guocai, an official at the Jiaojiang police bureau.
More guard stations of this kind will be introduced to medical institutions under the jurisdiction of the Jiaojiang public security bureau, according to local police on Tuesday.
