(ECNS) -- A 53-year-old man said he has lived in a sewer in downtown Beijing for some 20 years, the Beijing Morning Post reported.
The man, surnamed Wang, is not homeless. He is a villager from Beijing's Huairou district, and does odd jobs in the city. He said he lived in the sewer to save on rent.
"Renting a room will cost me at least 300 yuan a month. It's too expensive," Wang said.
Wang said he's the only income source in his family, where three children are in middle school, and his wife is a full-time homemaker.
Earlier posts online said an old woman lived under a sewer around the area where Wang lived, and he confirmed it.
A cleaner in the area said the old woman and her husband, both over 70, have lived in the sewer for more than five years. "They make money by begging during the day," he said.
A toll collector at a nearby parking lot said the old woman lived there alone this year. "We don't know where her husband has gone."
Local police have arranged temporary housing for Wang, and they promised to keep an eye on the old woman.
