(ECNS) – The heavy smog blanketing central and eastern China in recent days has spurred some people to invent new ways to protect their lungs, according to Cnhubei.com.
One is a face mask made from a pomelo fruit. It is widely thought that pomelo peel can suck up odors and formaldehyde.
A more complex mask is made of a plastic coke bottle stuffed with activated carbon and pieces of gauze, while another person has fashioned a pair of nose plugs using unwrapped cigarette filters.
There is also an electronic gadget equipped with a small air pump and oil jugs made to purify air, but it is relatively expensive.
Hu Yi, a respiratory department director at the Central Hospital of Wuhan, said the nose plugs and bottle are not feasible. "Filters blocking noses may force people to breathe with their mouths, and activated carbon in the bottle mask can be breathed in, both of which will harm users," Hu said.
Citizens should buy qualified products to protect themselves from smog, suggested Hu.
