Los Angeles (CNS) -- The police department of Alhambra, California, on Monday opened an account on Sina Weibo, a China-based microblogging website similar to Twitter, making the account "http://weibo.com/alhambrapolice" the first opened by a US police department.
"Since the city is home to many Chinese residents who haven't gotten used to Twitter, the opening of the account will help the police station better serve the Chinese community in the city," said Alhambra Mayor Stephen Sham.
"The Alhambra Police Department would like to use Weibo as a means of increasing communication and engagement with the Chinese population in Alhambra," said Police Chief Mark Yokoyama.
The newly opened account is also expected to facilitate investment from Chinese businesses in the region.
A recent demographic census shows that over half the residents of Alhambra are of Asian descent, and three-fourths are from the Chinese mainland.
Although some US government agencies have joined Weibo for tourism purposes, the account opened by Alhambra police represents the first Weibo initiative to specifically target Chinese immigrants.
