(ECNS) -- A senior man who ate a stranger's leftovers at a Guangzhou restaurant has shamed many people into promising to be frugal about food, the Guangzhou Daily said on Tuesday.
The story of the man dubbed "Guangpan Laoren" (senior man of empty plate) was posted by a netizen named "xiuguo" and drew much attention Monday on Sina Weibo.
A man named Zhang Jianxin said online that he and a friend dined at an old and famous noodle restaurant in Guangzhou on Sunday afternoon, and that they shared a table with a younger man who left without finishing his meal. Not long after, a senior man wearing old but clean clothes walked over and asked if he could eat the leftovers.
Zhang offered to buy another bowl of noodles for him, but the old man refused, saying he wasn't a beggar.
"I just hate to see food go to waste," he said.
The virtuous senior has struck a chord with netizens, many of whom have promised to reduce food waste.
