(ECNS) – A department at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, located in Chengdu, Sichuan province, has adopted a facial recognition system to make sure grad students attend lab, the Chengdu Business Daily reported.
The high-tech scanner has been in service since early December. A student at the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics said it has replaced a fingerprint scanning system that some students were tricking with "fingerprint membranes."
The school's dean, Qin Kaiyu, who launched the facial recognition system, said "some graduate students haven't show up at lab, wasting their time in bed or on video games."
Many students have complained, but Qin said he stands by the system.
