Sanya (ECNS) – US Ambassador Gary Locke said Saturday at the Sanya Forum in South China's Hainan province that the US rebalance strategy toward Asia does not mean containing China, but more engagement with China.
"Many people in China think that the US goal to rebalance is to contain China and to limit China's right politically and economically, that is simply not the case," Locke said. "To the contrary, strong and stable US-China relations are a critical part of the rebalance."
Frequent exchanges by the two countries' leaderships have underlined the significance of the US-China relationship, according to Locke.
Locke said the relationship between the two countries "is not a zero-sum game." "The US welcomes a strong and prosperous China that plays a key role in world affairs."
He said many global issues such as climate change, nuclear proliferation, and diseases can't be resolved by either country alone, and require cooperation between the US and China.
He hoped that in 50 years, history would tell of great achievements made by the two countries' joint efforts.
Speaking of China's reform, Locke said the reform plans released at the third plenary session in November have excited the US. "As the world's two largest economies, our two governments' policies have significant consequences beyond our own two borders."
Locke said both the US and China have a special responsibility to work with other economies and multinational organizations to create a stronger framework for sustaining world development.
The Sanya Forum 2013 took place in China's Hainan province from Dec 13 to 15.
