(ECNS) -- Officials in Chengdu, Sichuan province, are investigating an illegal radio station set up by taxi drivers in the city after a pilot who just took off heard on his receiver an inexplicable conversation instead of instructions from the control tower on Nov 23, the Chengdu Commercial Daily said on Tuesday.
In the conversation, someone asked, "What's for dinner tonight? Mutton soup or boiled pork feet?"
The pilot, learning that it was a communication interference, reported it to the control tower.
Since there were several other pilots who reported that they also heard conversations about calling a taxi, the airport control tower inferred that it was a private radio station for taxi drivers that sent the distracting radio waves.
The CAAC Southwest Regional Administration was able to fix the illegal radio receiver's location at somewhere near the Chengdu University of Technology.
The radio receiver was confiscated by the municipal radio wave management agency, and the owner of the device was asked to come to the agency and may face a fine of 1,000 to 5,000 yuan ($164.70 to $823.50).
Radio wave is a kind of national resource, and no organization or individual is allowed to use it without official permission, the agency said.
The CAAC Southwest Regional Administration urged the public not to set up private radio stations, as airwave interference may lead to accidents during plane take-offs and landings.
