(ECNS) – Health authorities in Jiangxi province confirmed that an elderly woman in Nanchang died on Dec 6 after contracting the H10N8 virus, a new strain of bird flu.
The woman, 73 years old, was admitted to a hospital in Nanchang on Nov 30, and her clinical diagnosis was severe pneumonia, according to the emergency response office of the provincial health department.
She suffered from underlying chronic illnesses like hypertension, heart disease, and myasthenia gravis.
The woman visited a local live poultry market before falling ill.
Her relatives who had been in contact with her have so far shown no abnormal symptoms.
An initial assessment suggested the death was an individual case and the risk of human infection remained low, according to a local expert.
