(ECNS) -- Vehicle stickers with the logo of China Central Television (CCTV) have become hot products on Taobao.com, China's largest online shopping site.
Netizens said the stickers can help drivers beat tickets from traffic police, the Beijing News said on Thursday.
A search for "CCTV car sticker" on Taobao.com returned 730 results.
An owner of a Zhejiang-based online store said car stickers with the CCTV logo have long been hot sellers. He was not obligated to interfere in how buyers use those stickers, he added.
The car stickers are sold for 6 yuan ($0.98) at the store. A total of 19 such stickers were sold in one month at the store.
One of the online comments for the product reads in part: "Having the sticker on my car, I once ran a red light but was not fined. I just told the traffic police that I was a reporter with CCTV, and was in a hurry to get to an interview. Then the police let me go."
"CCTV actually doesn't have cars specially designed for news interviews. Most of the cars bearing CCTV logos on roads are not company cars from the TV station," said a journalist from CCTV, who added that only outside broadcasting vehicles of CCTV bear the logo.
Central China Television owns exclusive rights to use the logo "CCTV." Using stickers bearing the logo without authorization from the company amounts to trademark infringement, which is illegal, according to Yi Shenghua, a lawyer from Beijing.
China's Road Traffic Safety Law says drivers who put such stickers on their cars should be fined no less than 500 yuan and no more than 1,000 yuan, Yi added.
