(ECNS) -- Prolonged smoggy weather in Wuhan, Hubei province, has contributed to an increased number of cancer patients in the city. The youngest patient who suffers from tumor is only one year old, cyol.net said Monday.
The city reported 27 smoggy days in October, the highest number for the same period since 1961.
The number of hospital beds in the Cancer Center of Wuhan Union Hospital has tripled to over 1,000 in less than 10 years, but it is still not enough to handle all patients in need, said Liu Li, a doctor at the hospital who is also a CPPCC member.
"Patients with lung cancer account for the largest part of sufferers, and the youngest patient suffering from tumor is only one year old," Liu said.
Liu suggested local policymakers take measures to improve air quality in order to improve local residents' health condition.
The local green department should introduce advanced garbage incinerators to reduce the emission of harmful gases that are released by refuse burning, Liu said.
Some CPPCC members also suggested imposing bans on smoking in public areas in the city.
