(ECNS) – A private enterprise in Sichuan province announced on Sunday that it will build a life-sized replica of the Titanic in Daying county as a world-class tourist attraction, Xinhuanet reported.
Sichuan-based Seven Star Energy Investment Group said it plans to invest one billion yuan (US$165.4 million) in the project and finish construction in two years.
To make the copy exactly the same as the original, the project's design team will refer to the design and decorations of the RMS Olympic, a sister ship of the Titanic, said Curtis Schnell, a member of the team who participated in the production design of the world-famous movie "Titanic".
"The replica is not only to boost the local tourism industry, but also to share and spread the spirit of the Titanic," said Schnell.
Su Shaojun, chief executive of the investment group, said the purpose of the project is to let tourists experience what the shipwreck was like and "inspire responsibility."
Bernard Hill, who played Captain Edward Smith in "Titanic", was invited to be a consultant on the project. He was also appointed "captain" of the replica.
