(ECNS)-- A car thief who drove away a car with a 5-year-old girl inside chose to help the child find her father and bought her snack food, Xiaoxiang Morning News said on Tuesday.

The theft occurred in Binzhou city, Hubei province, on Dec 29, 2013, while the car owner, surnamed Cao, was shopping at a supermarket after leaving his daughter Sisi in the car.

Huang, a drug addict, decided to steal the car and sell it.

Seeing a stranger get into the car, the girl tried to stop him from driving it away. Huang, ignoring the girl, drove toward Zixing city.

During the journey, Huang spent all his money — 40 yuan ($6.60) – for gas and 10 yuan for snacks for the girl.

"The girl then wept for her father," Huang said. "I wanted to help the girl find her father, so I dialed a number painted on a business card provided by the girl with a cell phone borrowed from a police officer standing by the road."

"Since the number didn't help me contact the girl's father, I returned the cell phone to the police and continued to drive."

About 6 o'clock that evening, Huang stopped the car in Zixing, where he was seized by friends of the car owner who had been chasing Huang based on information reported by local media about the case.

Huang was then sent to local police, where he is being held under a charge of larceny.
