Sanya (ECNS) -- The municipal government of Sanya issued a notice on Thursday prohibiting skinny dipping and naked sunbathing at Dadonghai Beach.
Violators of the regulation will be punished, according to the notice.
People who have to treat diseases through heliotherapy are suggested to wear bathing suits or swimming trunks.
On the same day, a team of security officers, urban management officers, and armed police officers carried out a campaign to persuade tourists not to skinny dip and sunbath naked at the beach.
The beach has been chosen by tourists as a place for skinny dipping for years, according to a local resident surnamed Zhou, who added that "most of those who come here to bath or swim naked are from northern China."
"It's uncivilized for people to go skinny dipping and sunbathe naked in a public area," Zhou said
Since the notice was released, the number of people skinny dipping in the area has been reduced.
