(ECNS) -- A monkey found at an intersection on the highway linking Chengdu and Mianyang in Sichuan province on Thursday hurt two firemen who tried to catch it, Newssc.org reported on Friday.

The monkey was reported seen on the highway in Xiaode county, Mianzhu city.

A team of firefighters from nearby Deyang city reached the spot at midnight after they were called in.

Since the monkey is a species under state protection, the firefighters decided to capture it alive.

The monkey bit the leg of a firefighter and hurt another's hands while they were trying to catch it.

The monkey was handed over to the local forestry authorities after being captured.
