(ECNS) -- A 32-year-old man attempted suicide after he failed to pay his credit card debt of 110,000 yuan ($18,141) in total, the Strait Metropolis Daily said on Saturday.
He had used the entire overdraft to make himself look rich in front of relatives during Spring Festival, it said.
The man, surnamed Yang, is a labor contractor who worked in Fuzhou, Fujian province. He didn't earn enough money to help him look good in front of his family and friends, so he decided to take advances from his four credit cards.
Most of the money went to gambling with his friends, and the rest was used as gifts to Yang's family members.
Yang said he didn't think he would spend so much money during the short holiday, and he learned the specific sum only after he received short messages from the banks.
The man tried to borrow money but failed. Knowing he couldn't afford to pay back the debt, Yang chose to commit suicide.
He jumped into a river in Fuzhou on Friday morning but was saved by an old man who was swimming in the river.
