(ECNS) -- A 8-year-old girl in Nanchong city, Sichuan province, drowned after being thrown into a river by a 40-year-old man, the West China Metropolis Daily reported on Tuesday.
The girl named Xiaofei (pseudonym) was walking over a bridge with her grandmother on Jan 24 when a man in his 40s came up from behind, grabbed the girl and threw her into the river below. He also jumped into the water.
The grandmother lost consciousness and has little memory of the incident.
The girl and the man were picked up by fishermen. The man survived and has been detained by police.
The death of the girl has brought tremendous grief to her parents, who have been divorced since 2010, but compensation seems unlikely due to the poor financial conditions of the killer.
"Local police told me the perpetrator's family had no money to compensate our losses," the girl's father said. "My family is also poor, so my daughter's cremation was paid for by the police."
A further investigation shows that the suspect is an unemployed resident of the city's Jialing district.
A police officer told the reporter that the man might have psychological problems.
The police said they will conduct a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect and that a further investigation will be carried out.
