(ECNS) -- Li Ka-shing, Asia's richest man, is among a group who have invested $23 million in a US firm that invented the "artificial egg," the Hong Kong-based Ming Pao said.
Hampton Creek Foods, a company headquartered in Northern California, has found new ways of utilizing plants to replace eggs. Their egg substitute is already on shelves in some places in the US.
Li, who is estimated to be worth $29.5 billion, said he believed the firm had huge potential. To keep up with demand for the growing global population we need to be more efficient, more environmentally friendly, and have more quality and offer affordable choices, he said.
Josh Tetrick, the CEO of the company, said he flew to Hong Kong to meet Li, and posted a photo showing Li making a fried "artificial egg."
An egg substitute created by a US company is on shelves in the United States and might enter the Chinese market next year, China International Radio (CNR) reported.
