Zhengzhou (ECNS) – A shop outside Qingling Primary School in Zhengzhou, Henan province, had caused an uproar among parents for selling live bee pupae to students.
The colorfully packaged pupae are sold in pairs for half a yuan, and are very popular among local children.
A fifth-grade student named Zhang Kexuan showed how to "play with the toy," breaking off a pupa and releasing the little bee.
Zhang then killed the bee, saying "It can't survive anyway."
Chen Yurong, a third-grade girl, said many of her classmates had played with the bee pupae, and that some had brought them into classrooms.
Many parents have been appalled by the trend. He Ran, the mother of a third-grade boy, said she feared her son and other students might get stung by the bees.
Another parent named Zhang Baohui said that bee pupae are living beings, not just toys. "They bought the bee pupae for fun and curiosity, but then they just killed them. Such an attitude toward living things is unhealthy."
A teacher at the school said he would report the problem to school leaders and deal with it as soon as possible.
Live chickens have also been sold at shops near the school, but were stopped by the school, he added.
