(ECNS) -- A father in Sichuan province punished his son by making him stand in public holding a sign reading "I stole money from my parents," the West China Metropolis Daily observed on Tuesday.

The 11-year-old boy is a sixth-grader at a primary school in Tanmu town of Dazhou city. The boy took 170 yuan ($27) from home without permission, then bought snacks and played video games.

After his father found out, the man beat his son and paraded him through a main street on Saturday.

Some passersby tried to protect the boy, and the father was finally stopped by a teacher named Jin Cheng, who also took the sign away from the boy.

Persuaded by Jin, the father then took his crying son home.

"The father's behavior is a violation of the law and he infringed upon the boy's dignity," said Tan Lishun, a local lawyer.

Such behavior amounts to emotional abuse, which can have a negative influence on a child's growth, according to a psychology professor at the Sichuan University of Arts and Science.
