(ECNS) -- Two young Chinese men climbed to the top of the unfinished Shanghai Tower on Thursday in direct challenge to a pair of Russians who had already scaled the building, reports Jfdaily.com.
The two Chinese climbers, both in their early twenties, are from central China's Henan province.
One of the climbers named Gao said: "We watched the video about the climbing process the two foreigners used, and thought we could manage it."
"We just wanted to prove that we Chinese also have a spirit of adventure," he added.
The two snuck into the construction site at midnight on Wednesday and started climbing at 3:00 a.m. Thursday.
It took them 80 minutes to get to the top of the skyscraper.
"We feel proud because we were faster than the Russian climbers," said Gao.
Like the Russians, the Chinese men have posted photos and videos of their climb online.
The 632-meter Shanghai Tower has been under construction in Lujiazui district, a gleaming financial center directly across from the city's famous Bund, since 2008. It's set for completion later this year.
An official in charge of the building said security checks around the construction site will be tightened.
