(ECNS) -- A political advisor has criticized a fanatical obsession with South Korean TV dramas for undermining China's cultural self-esteem, the Guangzhou Daily reported Sunday.  [Special coverage]

The remark was made Saturday by Xu Qinsong, president of the Guangdong Painting Academy and member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. On his way to the annual two sessions, he told reporters that the obsession with South Korean TV dramas has arisen from China's lack of confidence in its own culture.

South Korean dramas have perfected the genre and are good at telling stories, Xu said. However, good stories were abundant in the history of Guangdong, yet we lack good editors.

Xu suggested that Chinese talents should write their own stories and focus more on originality.

"My Love from the Stars,"or "You Who Came from the Stars," a South Korean TV drama, has gained a massive following in China, many of whom are also obsessed with the food eaten by the characters in the show.
