(ECNS)-- Two young men playing with a bottle of pepper spray on the Guangzhou metro caused a disturbance among passengers, and eight were injured in the stampede and sent to the hospital, the Guangzhou Daily reported.
A netizen named Liang Ziqi posted photos on Sina Weibo, saying that a stampede occurred at about 11:00 am on Subway Line 5. The photos show shoes, earphones and bags were left behind on an empty metro train and the platform.
In a telephone interview with the Beijing News, Liang said passengers suddenly ran to the front of the train as it was leaving Guangzhou Railway Station.
As soon as the train arrived at the next station, all the passengers rushed to get off. He heard one passenger tell metro staff that two men with tattoos on their arms sprayed an irritant gas on the back of the train.
At least two passengers were taken away on stretchers, Liang said. "Passengers might have thought they were being attacked by terrorists."
The official account from Guangdong police on Sina Weibo said four were injured slightly and a bottle was found to contain pepper spray. Further investigation is underway, they added.
Guangzhou's metro company said train services resumed after a short period of suspension.
