(ECNS) -- A legislator who has focused on food security displayed adulterated rice during a panel meeting at this year's "two sessions" on Thursday, calling for more supervision over food safety, Chinanews.com reported. [Special coverage]
Zhu Zhangjin, party secretary of Huafeng village in Zhejiang province and chairman of Kasen International Holdings, one of China's biggest leather producers, showed a glass of smelly rice that had been injected with water to the media and other attendees at the ongoing session of the National People's Congress.
Water injection is an unspoken rule in rice processing industry, according to the NPC deputy.
Some sellers at small workshops will inject about a ton of water into 10 tons of rice, and the water is usually taken from local rivers, Zhu said.
The cost of rice is more than four yuan per kilo, but rice in the market is sold as cheap as four yuan. "Where does the profit come from, and what about packaging and transport costs?" he asked.
Such rice is mostly sold to canteens, Zhu added.
At the two sessions last year, Zhu brought more than 300 samples of banned chemicals and contaminated food products he had collected from farmers and producers.
