(ECNS) – A horror movie based on the mysterious death of Chinese Canadian Elisa Lam is to be made by Sony Pictures, according to the US-based Chinese newspaper World Journal.
The project is based on a screenplay titled "The Bringing" written by Brandon Murphy and Phillip Murphy, involving a plot that has a private detective looking into homicides at the Cecil Hotel after Elisa Lam's death.
Lam, a 21-year-old Canadian tourist, mysteriously disappeared from the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles and was found dead in a rooftop tank of the hotel on Feb 21, 2013, three weeks after she was reported missing. The case is still unsolved.
The project has sparked outrage among netizens. A Web user said the company was too eager to make a profit off a girl who has been dead only one year. And another commented that the company had no right to exploit the girl's death with a supernatural scary movie and her parents should sue.
It's not the first movie getting inspiration from Lam's death. Last August, Chinese director Liu Hao said he would make a horror movie that might have some plot elements similar to Lam's death. He even stayed at the Cecil Hotel for several days to collect clues and material. And Hong Kong director and actor Nick Cheung added "ghost incident in the elevator" to his upcoming movie.
