(ECNS) -- A 15-year-old student in middle school used a cellphone light to do her homework for over three hours, because she didn't want to wake up her grandmother, Wuhan-based Chutian Metropolis Daily reported.
Han Yuting, from the No. 2 Middle School of Gangcheng in Wuhan, Hubei province, sent a message to her teacher about 11pm last Wednesday, "I haven't finished my homework yet. My grandma can't sleep with the light on, so I have to keep pressing my cellphone for lighting."
Han said she hoped her teacher would let her have more time after learning about her situation.
Chen Wen, Han's teacher, said she sympathized, but replied, "I will have more concern for you, but I can't lower my expectation of you. You need to try harder to finish your homework."
Han handed in her finished homework a day late, Chen added.
Chen then learned that Han's mother was in the hospital looking after her injured husband, leaving Han's grandmother with her at home. The poor family shares one bedroom, which led to Han's using a cellphone light for homework.
Han's story has touched her classmates, and one of them, Cen Chao, said all her classmates admired her toughness.
Han's father was also moved by his daughter. "She calls almost every night, asking me to take care of myself."
