(ECNS)-- A 10.8-meter whale was found dead on a beach in Tai Po in the New Territories of Hong Kong, Ming Pao newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The decaying carcass of the whale was discovered by hikers in an inner bay off Hung Shek Mun near the Yan Chau Tong Marine Park on Saturday.
As the largest whale found beached in Hong Kong, the animal was tested and determined to be an adult female.
A group of experts from Hong Kong Ocean Park said the genus of the whale has not been defined, but it has never been seen in Hong Kong's water.
The cause of death could not been confirmed because the carcass was badly decomposed when it was found.
A veterinarian said that human activity might be the reason behind the whale's death, since scars caused by fishing tools and ropes could be seen on the carcass.
The Ocean Park said it would keep the whale bones for research, and the body would be handed over to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department.
