(ECNS) – A professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on Tuesday took off his shoes and walked out in the middle of a speech by Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the Global Times, according to takunpao.com, citing Mingpao Daily.
In his speech, Hu had said that the Global Times was not an official media outlet, but a market-based newspaper that represents the majority's opinion. It has two "bosses" – the government and the market – to serve, he added.
He claimed that the newspaper's opinions were consistent with the public's, but added that media shouldn't lose touch with politics. Chinese media should also explore ways to shape the country's characteristics, he said.
Hu also said that the Chinese mainland hopes Hong Kong will keep its characteristics, but reminded the audience of China's Central Government and the Basic Law.
"Keep your democracy, but don't lose stability," he said.
Hu's comment that the Global Times represents the voice of the Chinese majority received boos from the audience.
Professor Chow Po Chung then asked people who didn't agree with Hu to raise their hands. After seeing more than half of them raise their hands, he took off his shoes and left the site barefooted in protest.
Joseph Chan, the organizer of the speech, said Hu had been invited to speak because he is a controversial representative of China's media.
