(ECNS) – Chinese tycoon and philanthropist Chen Guangbiao claimed he had been awarded the title of "World's Most Prominent Philanthropist" by a UN organization, which was questioned as being fake, the Southern Urban Daily reported.
According to Chen, he received an award from the president of the China Foundation for Global Partnership (CFGP), which was in support of the UN, on June 25, when he hosted a charity luncheon for poor and destitute Americans in New York City. The certificate reads, "Award to China's Moral Role Model and Number One Philanthropist Model Mr. Chen Guangbiao with the honorary title of 'Global Peace and Goodwill Ambassador and World's Most Prominent Philanthropist'."
However, on the certificate, the UN was spelled "United Nation" rather than "United Nations". And Chinese media and netizens didn't find any clue to connect the foundation to the UN.
The evidence led the public to question the authenticity of the award. Some netizens even said the award was created by Chen himself.
In an exclusive interview with The Paper (www.thepaper.cn), Chen said a woman named Zhou Lulu told him that CFGP could issue the award to him, and under Zhou's proposal, he donated $30,000 to the foundation.
"I might have been cheated," Chen added.
