(ECNS) – China's local government debts are containable, said Sheng Laiyun, spokesman for China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Sheng said the debt level is below the international safety line and will continue that way.
The central government has been paying great attention to the problem over the past couple of years. It has issued several notices urging local governments to clean up their debts.
China's local government debt had swelled to about 20.7 trillion yuan ($3.4 trillion) as of June 2013.
