Weihai (CNS) -- A memorial ceremony at sea will be held by the Chinese navy to mark the 120th anniversary of the outbreak of the First Sino-Japanese War, commonly known in China as the Jiawu War, China News Service reported.
Navy spokeswoman Xing Guangmei on Tuesday disclosed the agenda for a war symposium to be held by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) navy and the Academy of Military Sciences on the navy's No.88 Ship, which is at anchor in Weihai, Shandong province.
A memorial ceremony will also be held in nearby sea areas to mark the anniversary, she added.
The symposium starts Wednesday and will last two days.
During the war between 1894 and 1895, Chinese sailors of the Beiyang Fleet of the Qing Dynasty set forth from the port of Weihai to take on the invading Japanese fleet, but were defeated.
Jiawu refers to the year 1894, as named under the traditional sexagenary system of years. China's traditional calendar follows a sixty-year cycle. Both 1894 and 2014 are Jiawu years: the year of the wood horse.
