(ECNS) -- Human-like bones have been found in a shaft on western Beijing's Tietuo Mountain by an outdoors rescue team, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.
An Ren, head of the voluntary team, said they reached the mountain shaft in Mentougou district on Wednesday afternoon, following clues given by an outdoor sports enthusiast.
"We spotted something white, like human bone, at the bottom of the shaft," An explained, adding that the shaft itself measured 24 meters deep.
With nothing to attach ropes to, decent was made impossible.
Local villagers told An that human bones had been found in the past. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45), Japanese soldiers had dumped the bodies of Chinese victims into the shaft, they said, citing elders.
An said they have reported the find to local police and would help retrieve the items if needed.
