(ECNS) -- A kindergarten in Shanghai has apologized for unintentionally using a Japanese military song as background music at a graduation ceremony.
A class of children at Zhendan Kindergarten in Shanghai's Zhabei district played drums with the song at a graduation ceremony on June 27, which parents posted online.
The video clip made a splash online Thursday, after the background music was identified by netizens as Warship March, a song for the Imperial Japanese Navy, reports said.
The local education department said that afternoon that an investigation had been launched, and promised to deal with the incident seriously.
In a written apology to the public, the head of the kindergarten said the headmaster didn't know anything about the song and selected the music at random for the children's performance.
The headmaster has been suspended, the People's Daily Online said.
