(ECNS) -- A university president has been exposed to have inspected troops of students in an black open-roof limousine, arousing wide-spread online criticism.

As a performance feature of annual military education and training for freshmen, more than 6000 new students at Anhui Xinhua University gathered on the track field to undergo principal "inspection," according to a report and photos posted on its website last Friday.

The photo immediately caught the attention of netizens after local media posted it on Sina Weibo over the weekend.

A netizen criticized the principal for having "such a desire to be a government official," while another added "a military inspection is not something just anyone can do."

Reporters have since failed to contact Shi. The university subsequently deleted the report on its website on Sunday evening, stating it had been written by a college student who used the wrong words.

However, students at the university said it is "quite common, as such scenes occur every year."

At the same time, another Anhui university has been exposed for having inspected student troops in a similar fashion. "Netizens are too serious about it," university staff told reporters.

The PLA Daily criticized these universities for hyping their military trainings on its official account.

"Military inspections" normally refer to a ceremony conducted by party or national leaders for the inspection of soldiers specifically.
