(ECNS) -- Sina Executive Vice President and Editor-in-Chief Chen Tong announced on Sina Weibo that he will quit from the company.

Chen has worked for Sina over 17 years. He has helped build the Sina Weibo brand, a Chinese version of Twitter, which has become one of the most popular sites in the country with over 500 million registered users.

Soho China Ltd chairman Pan Shiyi reposted Chen's Weibo message and commented that, "Thanks for building up Sina Weibo, which proves to have helped promote China's social progress in the last few years."

Despite leaving the post, Chen will serve as a development adviser to Sina, according to a letter the company CEO Cao Guowei sent to his employees.
