(ECNS) – A one-meter tall, alien-like robot with eyes stretching out like antennae becomes the "coolest" part of Beijing's gear for APEC security.
The F6A EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) robot made in the United States is the most advanced and versatile bomb remover on the market. It's able to work on sloping or rugged surfaces, and its three eyes can take panoramic photos of a site.
What's more, it has a powerful water hose that can destroy explosive items in emergencies. Previous versions of the robot could only move items to other places for disposal.
"The robot is agile enough for a wide range of missions," said Xing Zhigang, head of the EOD battalion of the Beijing special police corps. "Its ability to perform in hazardous environments protects the safety of the EOD team."
Xing also introduced a set of three devices that can scan and define the internal structure of suspicious items, helping the EOD battalion to quickly neutralize the explosives.
The Beijing police have been ramping up security for the APEC Economic Leaders meetings, which will last from November 5 to 11. More than 700 HD cameras have been installed for traffic offenses, and more patrol stations have been added to reduce crime.
