(ECNS) -- Air pollution in China could be greatly reduced by 2030 through a range of measures and industrial restructuring, an official with the country's top economic planner said on Tuesday.

"From today through to 2030, we can reduce air pollution in China, and 'APEC blue' days are also achievable," Xie Zhenhua, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said at a press conference at the State Council Information Office.

"APEC blue," a term coined for the blue skies during the recent APEC meetings in Beijing, has spurred confidence that clean air is attainable if the government introduces more measures to curb pollution.

However, according to Xie, anti-pollution restrictions might constrict social and economic development in the short term.

"China has made a few digressions and some mistakes which have led to serious air pollution," he explained.

The current aim is to realize sustainable development—promoting economic and social wellbeing while protecting the environment, Xie said, adding that China needs to achieve economic growth while combating the problem of climate change.
