(ECNS)-- Chinese telecom equipment leader Huawei is striving to promote a global industry standard for fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology and expects commercial 5G operation by 2020.
Xu Zhijun, executive vice president of Huawei, said at the Global Mobile Broadband Forum 2014 that there are no official standards governing 5G technology and connectivity, but that Huawei has been actively facilitating their creation.
Huawei and its 5GIC partners launched the world's first test center at the University of Surrey in early November. The 5GIC is an international hub for telecommunications research and innovation with large scale 5G experimental facilities and specialized laboratories.
Early reports point to attainment of speeds as much as 1000 times faster than current 4G networks.
China started its 5G research in 2013 with an initial investment of about 300 million yuan. Huawei, one of the core members of the project, launched its own research and development in 2009.
Huawei previously announced deployment of a 5G trial network by 2018 and commercial operation by 2020.
